Discovering Matek

A Sustainable Design Innovation by Studio Mater
Posted by Giulia in Daily, Inspirations on May 16, 2025

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Trends & Traditions fair here in Copenhagen — a vibrant gathering that never fails to spark inspiration and showcase the future of design.

Among the many fascinating encounters I had, one stood out in particular: my discovery of Matek, a sustainable material developed by the Danish design studio Mater.

Matek isn’t just another eco-friendly material — it’s a tangible example of how thoughtful innovation can turn waste into beauty. Developed as part of Mater’s ongoing commitment to circular design, Matek is created from a unique blend of industrial plastic waste and fiber-based waste such as coffee bean shells or sawdust.

The result?

A durable, versatile material that can be molded into beautifully crafted furniture and design pieces.

What impressed me most about Mater’s approach is how seamlessly sustainability is integrated into their design philosophy.

Rather than treating it as a trend or afterthought, it’s embedded into every stage of their process — from sourcing discarded materials to rethinking traditional production methods.

At their stand, I had the chance to see some of their latest designs made with Matek, and I was struck not only by their aesthetics but also by the story behind each object.

In a world where the design industry is being challenged to rethink its impact, Mater’s Matek is a hopeful glimpse into what’s possible when innovation meets responsibility.

It’s more than just a material — it’s a mindset.

If you’re passionate about sustainable design or simply curious about the next wave of eco-conscious materials, keep an eye on what Mater is doing. I certainly will be!
