Seeing Differently: Fritz Syberg at Ordrupgaard

Posted by Giulia in Daily, Inspirations on July 10, 2025

When I visited Ordrupgaard, I wasn’t expecting to be moved by an artist I’d never heard of.

But Fritz Syberg surprised me.

At first glance, his works seemed almost photographic—scenes of everyday life captured with calm precision. But then I got closer. And that’s when everything changed.

Up close, you could see his pen strokes layered over watercolor—delicate, confident, alive. They reminded me of architectural sketches, the kind designers use to test and dream. There was something raw and honest about them, as if the artist had let you into his process, not just his product.

What moved me most, though, was how perspective changed everything. From afar, these were quiet, controlled compositions. But near, they became something else entirely—intimate, imperfect, tactile. Almost like entering another world.

And it made me think.

How many times do we look at something—or someone—from one distance only? How often do we forget that with a shift in perspective, what seemed fixed can transform?

Art, like life, asks us to look again. To look closer.

To change our point of view.
